2025 NBA Playoff Predictions - 1st Round

The 2025 NBA Playoffs tip off with a first round loaded with potential fireworks—at least in a few key matchups. Pistons vs. Knicks, Bucks vs. Pacers, Lakers vs. T-Wolves, and Nuggets vs. Clippers all have the ingredients for seven-game slugfests: star power, history, and just the right amount of tension. The rest? Let’s just say we’re not holding our breath—expect a few sweeps and some quick 4-1 exits. Here’s how we see the opening round shaking out.

2025 NBA Playoff Bracket

Western Conference First Round

#1 Oklahoma City Thunder vs. #8 Memphis Grizzlies

This series will be a statement from the up-and-coming Thunder. With explosive scoring, elite defense, and an unselfish team culture, OKC will run Memphis off the floor. Expect blowouts, highlight plays, and a Grizzlies squad that just can't keep up with the pace or the depth. Ja Morant will struggle to find rhythm against an athletic Thunder backcourt that swarms every possession. The Thunder dominate from Game 1 and never look back.

Prediction: Thunder def. Grizzlies in 4 games.

#4 Denver Nuggets vs. #5 Los Angeles Clippers

This one's going the distance. With Kawhi Leonard and James Harden finally clicking and healthy, the Clippers have a balanced attack that can match up with anyone. Zubac’s interior presence, Powell’s spark off the bench, and Batum’s veteran savvy will give L.A. just enough edge. Jokic will put up absurd numbers, but the Nuggets’ supporting cast won't rise to the moment. In a tightly contested series, the Clippers steal Game 7 on the road.

Prediction: Clippers def. Nuggets in 7 games

#3 Los Angeles Lakers vs. #6 Minnesota Timberwolves

Don’t sleep on the Wolves—they’ll push the Lakers to their limit. But when it comes down to it, the Lakers simply have more closers. Luka Dončić will be the difference-maker in the halfcourt, LeBron will control the tempo and momentum, and their supporting cast will come up clutch when it matters most. The Wolves bring the fight, but the Lakers bring the finish.

Prediction: Lakers def. Timberwolves in 6 games

#2 Houston Rockets vs. #7 Golden State Warriors

The Rockets' young core shocked the league by grabbing the No. 2 seed, but they’re about to meet a very different kind of challenge. Curry and Jimmy Butler are built for playoff basketball—relentless, gritty, and composed under pressure. The Warriors will pick apart Houston’s inexperience, turning key moments into veteran wins. Houston has talent, but Golden State has the blueprint.

Prediction: Warriors def. Rockets in 5 games

Eastern Conference First Round

#1 Cleveland Cavaliers vs. #8 Miami Heat

Give Miami credit for clawing through the Play-In, but their run ends here. Cleveland’s size, depth, and defensive intensity will wear them down over five hard-fought games. Bam Adebayo will battle in the paint, and Jimmy Butler will keep it close, but the Cavs just have too many weapons.

Prediction: Cavaliers def. Heat in 5 games

#4 Indiana Pacers vs. #5 Milwaukee Bucks

Giannis is back, but the Bucks are still broken. Lillard’s health concerns, an aging supporting cast, and Doc Rivers on the bench doesn’t inspire confidence. Indiana plays fast, spreads the floor, and plays fearless. Tyrese Haliburton will lead the charge, and the Pacers will outpace the Bucks with energy and cohesion.

Prediction: Pacers def. Bucks in 6 games

#3 New York Knicks vs. #6 Detroit Pistons

Call it the upset special. The Pistons’ grit and physicality will rattle the Knicks in a pressure-filled series. Cade Cunningham is poised to announce himself to the basketball world, and if KAT, Bridges, and OG all bring their A-game, New York’s depth won’t be enough to counter. Brunson will fight, but the Knicks fold late in Game 7 at the Garden.

Prediction: Pistons def. Knicks in 7 games

#2 Boston Celtics vs. #7 Orlando Magic

The Magic are on the rise, but the Celtics are still the class of the East—if they stay healthy. Tatum, Brown, and Porzingis will do enough to outlast a tough, young Orlando squad. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner will have their moments, but Boston’s depth and playoff poise win out in the end.

Prediction: Celtics def. Magic in 5 games
